New York: day 177

I’m the proud recipient this year of the Stan Swinton scholarship from the Overseas Press Club Foundation. Swinton, who was an AP correspondent for 42 years, is best known for his account of Benito Mussolini’s slaying and subsequent hanging. I love it.

New York: day 176

Still not quite over the article in the last post. Breakfast with al Qaeda! If only. On domestic soil, this piece, about the process of recruiting football players to different colleges, really touched me. I think it was the part about how the University of Minnesota arranged to have a life-size cardboard cutout of 6-foot-8, 340-pound Seantrel Henderson in a Gopher uniform upon his arrival at the college. Cue waterworks.
